JAKARTA (TheInsiderStories) – President Joko Widodo is expected to appoint and install new Energy and Mineral Resources Minister (ESDM) and Deputy Minister later today, sources at the State Palace said.

Former Energy Minister Arcandra Tahar, current President Director of Pertamina Dwi Soetjipto, and former Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan  are front-runners to be picked as new energy minister.

Other sources told the Insider Stories, Ignasius Jonan could be appointed as new energy minister, Arcandra Tahar as deputy energy minister, while Dwi Soetjipto maintains his position as Pertamina president director.

Last night, President Joko Widodo has stated that he will pick a professional one as new energy minister, not representing a particular party. “What is certain is that the energy minister will come from professional background,” he told reporters at the State Palace, when asked by reporters.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Minister post has been vacant for about two months. The position was taken care by Luhut B. Panjaitan as acting Energy and Mineral Resources Minister. Luhut is Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs.

Arcandra Tahar, who has worked in the US for over twenty years was called back by President Joko Widodo few months ago to hold position as the energy minister. However, he only held the post for few weeks as the President dismissed him, in response to public protest that he held dual passport (Indonesia and US).

Indonesia does not recognize dual citizenship. The government however last month has reinstalled Arcandra Tahar’s Indonesian citizenship status, fueling speculation that he might be reappointed to the energy minister post. (*)
